  • How to Beat the High Cost of Orthodontic Braces
    By:J._Stewart

Orthodontic insurance is a specific type of coverage that provides protection for braces and other types of orthodontic dentistry. Visiting an orthodontist can be quite expensive, especially if you have no insurance. Most traditional dental insurance policies do not offer orthodontic coverage. Many consumers are under the impression that by owning a dental insurance policy that they're automatically covered, however, in most scenarios, that is not the case.

Orthodontic care is something that is best done during the younger years than it is when you are older. The teeth and the jaw line are more malleable during the early teen years and you could provide your family with a better, healthier life by having the procedure done sooner rather than later. This type of insurance will also help ease your mind if your children are still young and whether or not orthodontic procedures will be necessary is still questionable. If you need the insurance, it will be there. It is better to be prepared now than to worry about how you are going to afford to have your childrens teeth fixed.

Having orthodontic insurance is not a bad good option, especially if you have children, but it's a plan that stands alone and must be purchased separately from regular insurance. Unfortunately, most of these plans provide very limited protection. 50% coverage per occurrence is standard and most policies have a very low maximum coverage per year. An example could $2,000 for an individual or $4,000 per family. Let's say that your child needs braces that cost $3,000. In this example, you'd still have to pay $1500 out of pocket because even though the costs didn't exceed the annual limit of the policy, you're still responsible for half because of the 50% deductible.

Another option that has become very popular are called discount dental plans. These plans are not insurance, rather they are a network of dental providers that offer reduced fees for joining their plan. These fees range from 10% to as much as 60%. Many smaller procedures are included in the cost of the plan. Also, since they're not insurance, you don't have to worry about pre-existing conditions with discount plans.
